Artist Statement

As an artist, I seek raw honestly and genuine experiences in the everyday. The patterns of representation in art history fueled my curiosity of women’s portraiture. I wanted to know if they felt empowered by their surroundings. Applying these interests in the present, I decided to draw the female identity from members of the community. I sat with each woman, enjoying our conversation and sharing intimate struggles. Each portrait celebrates their femininity, strength and vulnerability with respect in layers of inky immutability..

The visual imagery is an encounter of emotional complexity, telling an individual narrative. The drawings begin as photographs. In the timely sessions we create bond while supporting each other. The creation of their larger than life portrait, revels their identity through the choices each model is encouraged to make. The format of the drawings demonstrates their power of presence, confronting the viewer to be within their space. Through these creations I seek to push the viewer to have acceptance of their individuality.
